FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if I am not a citizen of, but currently live in one of the countries listed?

Only citizens of the countries listed are eligible to compete in the contest.

What if I am a citizen of one of the listed countries but do not currently live there or have not lived there for several years?

You are still eligible to compete as long as you are a citizen of one of the countries listed.

Do I have to be a currently enrolled student?

No, you do not have to be a currently enrolled student but you must be 28 years of age or younger as of the deadline of April 1, 2009.

Do I have to be an alumnus of one of The Fund for American Studies’ programs?

No, you do not have to be an alumnus of The Fund for American Studies.

How long should entries be?

Essays should be at least 800 words but no more than 1600 words. Footnotes, citations, and essay title do not count towards the word limit.

How do I submit my essay?

Essays must be emailed to Ms. Kelsey Strampe at kstrampe@tfas.org or faxed to (202) 986-0390. All submissions must be received by April 1, 2009, no later than 5:00pm EST. No mailed entries will be accepted.

Can an essay entry remain anonymous?

Yes. If you would like TFAS to refrain from making your name public in the event that your essay is declared a winner, please check the appropriate box on the release form. Please note that you still must provide TFAS with your name and contact information.

When will TFAS announce the winners?

Winners will be announced in May 2009. All participants will be notified by email and the results will be published on our website.

Do essays have to be original and does TFAS retain the right to reprint essays?

Yes. As indicated in the Release Form, all essay submissions become property of The Fund for American Studies which retains the right to reprint essays. However contestants are allowed to republish their essays on their own, such as on a blog or for a class paper, and can use their own ideas for other written pieces.

 

Essays must be submitted on or before April 1, 2009 by 5:00pm EST.

No mailed submissions will be accepted. Decisions of the judges are final. Winners and other entrants will be notified by May 1, 2009.
