ADMISSIONSAdmissions Policies
Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis - applications are reviewed as they are received. Applications received by the early application deadline of January 31, 2008 will receive preference in admission and scholarship decisions. With rolling admissions, it is possible that admissions for students from your country will be closed before the final deadline.
Approximately 120 students will be admitted to the Institute. Eighty-Five percent of the student body will be from Central and Eastern Europe. Western European students are also welcomed to apply. Priority will be given to students living and studying in Europe, and to American citizens.
Students must be currently enrolled in a college or university. The Institute admits both graduate and undergraduate level students.
Students admitted to the program are expected to participate fully, which means attending all classes, lectures and social events. Individuals not enrolled in the program may not attend Institute events or stay in dormitory rooms assigned by The Fund for American Studies. The Institute discourages long-distance travel and visits by friends or relatives during the program.
Students admitted to the program who are unable to attend the institute are not guaranteed a place in the program the following year.
Students who reapply may use previously submitted references. All other material, however, should be resubmitted with appropriate updates.
Courses are conducted in English; therefore, proficiency in English is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have received a TOEFL score of 600 or higher; or equivalent scores from other testing services, such as IELTS. In the absence of a TOEFL or IELTS score, students must provide a testimonial letter from an English professor, or a certificate of English proficiency from an accredited institution.
All students must take a comprehensive written exam at the end of the Institute. Three undergraduate or graduate credit hours are available from Georgetown University. Undergraduate credit can be applied to a Bachelor degree. Graduate credit can be applied to a Master's degree or PhD.
Admissions decisions are based upon academic record, extracurricular achievements, leadership qualities, work experience and English language ability.
