LIFE IN GREECE

Housing & Location

The location for IIPES is the beautiful seaside town of Chania, Crete. Participants will be sure to enjoy the picturesque surroundings of the island as well as its many historical points of interest, such as Knossos, the ancient capital of the Minoan civilization. The town of Chania possesses unrivaled natural beauty, with its charming harbor and old town dating to Venetian times. Chania, which led the island in its fight for independence was home to the famous Greek statesman, Eleftherios Venizelos. The tombs of the Venizelos family are situated above the sea at Akrotiri, beside a statue of Elevtheria (Liberty).

IIPES is hosted at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh) in Chania, Crete. Classes are conducted in MAICh lecture halls and students live on-campus. Occupying a quiet and attractive campus just minutes from downtown Chania, MAICh has modern classrooms, dormitories, computer facilities, and dining facilities. The campus also has tennis and basketball courts and ping pong tables.

The Fund for American Studies will assign roommates so that students from the same country are not rooming together in order to promote cross-cultural exchange. Each dorm room has two single beds, desks, and a bathroom. All three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be served at the dining facilities on campus. Every effort will be made to provide vegetarian meal selections as alternatives for kosher and other special dietary requirements.
