Guest Lectures Series

During the course of the ILA program, guest lecturers will be invited to come into the classroom and speak with the students. Each week these lecturers will provide the students with an opportunity to see how the issues they learn about in class can be applied in the real world. The lectures are set up in such a way that there will be an extensive period at the end for the students to ask a variety of questions to the lecturer.

Guest lectures in the past include:

  • Mr. Jose Maria Aznar, Former Prime Minister of Spain
  • Mr. Sebastián Piñera, President of Chile
  • Mr. José Piñera, Father of Chile's pension system
  • Mrs. Monica Zalaquett, Chilean Congresswoman, UDI party
  • Mr. Jose Manuel Edwards, Chilean Congressman, RN Party
  • Mr. Ernesto Silva, Chilean Congressman, UDI party

Social & Cultural Events

Cultural Presentations dinner

During this annual event, students showcase their countries or cultures through traditional dance, costumes, songs, poems and cuisine. This is a unique opportunity for students to share their traditions and provide information for others to come and visit their homelands. Each group is given 5-7 minutes to present something entertaining for every student to enjoy.

Social Events

Throughout the summer, students are brought together to socialize and interact with one another. Participants can look forward to weekend excursions, special dinners, and celebrations.

Chilean Asado (Barbecue)

At University of the Andes, ILA participants will have a chance to enjoy a Chilean "asado," or barbecue, that features authentic Chilean food and folk dancing, giving students a chance to experience the country's culture and history with fellow students. This event allows the students to interact with staff, university personnel and fellow students, and to begin forging friendships with the other participants of the program.

Explore Chile

As an ILA participant, you will have many opportunities to see the sights and sounds that make Chile such a special place, including excursions to enjoy the history, heritage, and natural beauty of Chile.

Tour of Santiago

During the program, participants will enjoy a tour of historic downtown Santiago, where they will visit the historic La Moneda presidential palace as well as other well-known sites.

Trip to Valparaiso

Students will spend a whole day in Valparaiso, the beautiful coastal city that is home to Chile's government. While in Valparaiso, participants are given a guided tour of the Chilean National Congress, a visit La Sebastiana (the former home-turned-museum of Pablo Neruda), and a chance to explore the city's bustling shoreline, where shops and restaurants overlook the Pacific Ocean.
