Application Procedure


To Apply

To apply to a TFAS International Program, you need to complete an online application.  For detailed instructions on how to start an online application, please click here.

Application Materials

In your online application, you should answer all required questions and submit the following documents:

  • A statement of purpose explaining your reasons for applying to the program and what you hope to gain by attending 
  • A 500-1000 word writing sample (NOT required for the Asia Institute for Political Economy in Hong Kong; check online application for essay topic)
  • Your updated resume/CV
  • Your official transcript- required for Hong Kong Institute ONLY

Official transcripts must be in English.  If they are not in English they must be translated by an official translation agency.  We can accept a transcript that is scanned and uploaded into the online application, as long as it is a copy of your official transcript. You may also submit your official transcript by email, fax, or post.  If you email or fax your transcript to our office, you should upload a Word document in your application that indicates how and when you have submitted it.  You can upload this document in place of your transcript.

You will also need to request a letter of recommendation from a professor, adviser, or dean, or boss (we prefer someone who knows you in an academic capacity).  Your recommender can submit their letter for you through the online application system or by email, fax, or post.  If your recommender will be submitting their letter through the online application system, make sure you answer “Yes” to the question ‘Will this provider be submitting the letter of recommendation online?’  If they plan to submit it by email, post, or fax, please answer ‘No.’

Submitting Your Application

Once you complete the online application, make sure you click the ‘Submit Application’ button and follow all the required submission steps.  For detailed instructions on how to submit your application, click here.  You should receive a confirmation email once you successfully submit your application.

Where to Send Supplemental Materials

Below is the mailing address, fax number and email address where you and your recommender can send any of the required application materials.  Please keep in mind that your application will not be passed on to the Admissions Committee for review until all of the required materials have been received.   The Fund for American Studies is not responsible for incomplete applications and application materials that do not meet the requirements listed below will not be accepted.

Interviews

Applicants who make it through the first round of reviews will be selected for admissions interviews approximately 2-4 weeks after completing their applications.  If you are selected, a TFAS staff member will contact you to schedule the interview.

Admissions Decisions

Once you complete an admissions interview, a decision will be made on your application in approximately 2-3 weeks.  You will be notified by email when a decision has been made.
